Mujeres en Libertad

Grade SHB EP

Costa Rica Mujeres is a washed specialty green coffee produced through Café Mujeres en Libertad, a program launched by CoopeLibertad in 2024 to support women coffee producers across the highlands of Heredia in Costa Rica’s Central Valley. Produced primarily from Caturra and Catuai varieties and grown at high elevations, this traceable Costa Rican green coffee lot brings together coffees from women who play a leading role in the management and operation of their farms. The program combines coffee production with technical support, agronomic training, and farm management development, helping producers strengthen both coffee quality and long-term productivity.

In the cup, Costa Rica Mujeres presents notes of cocoa, roasted nuts, brown sugar, and soft vanilla sweetness. A juicy, fruit-like acidity brings balance to the profile, while the washed process keeps the flavours clean and balanced.. The result is a sweetCosta Rican coffee that’s easy to roast and performs well across a range of roast profiles.

Offered in 69kg bags and protected with GrainPro for freshness, Costa Rica Mujeres is a strong option for coffee roasters seeking traceable Costa Rica green coffee with consistent quality and a well-defined producer program.  beans backed by a clearly defined producer program and consistent cup quality. Every bag supports women who are not just growing coffee, but leading their farms, making key decisions, and helping shape the future of coffee in Costa Rica.

Direct trade green coffee imported by JA coffee through long-term relationships at origin, for specialty coffee roasters.

What is so special about this coffee?

Costa Rica Mujeres stands out because it is produced through Café Mujeres en Libertad, a program designed to strengthen the role of women coffee producers within their farms and communities. The initiative brings together an initial group of growers who receive ongoing support in agronomy, financial literacy, and farm management, helping improve both coffee quality and operational performance over time.

What makes this coffee especially meaningful is the way value is returned directly to origin. The premium generated through the program is reinvested into participating farms, supporting improvements that increase productivity, efficiency, and long-term sustainability. For roasters, this creates a traceable Costa Rica specialty coffee that connects quality, transparency, and measurable impact at the producer level.

Aquiares: Coffee Rooted in Community

Established in 1980, Aquiares has grown into one of Costa Rica’s largest coffee-producing estates, spanning 925 hectares in Turrialba, with more than 200 hectares preserved as protected forest. Its name, meaning “land between rivers,” reflects the close connection between coffee cultivation, the surrounding environment, and the community that has developed around the farm over generations.

Beyond coffee production, Aquiares has invested in initiatives that support long-term community wellbeing. A housing program introduced in the 1990s helped many workers become homeowners within the community, reinforcing the estate’s belief that sustainable coffee production should support both the land and the people who depend on it. Today, the farm continues combining coffee cultivation, community development, and responsible land management as part of its long-term vision for agriculture.

The Land Behind Aquiares Coffees

Aquiares benefits from elevations ranging between 800 and 1,400 meters above sea level, creating multiple microclimates across the farm. Combined with an extended rainy season and staggered flowering cycles, these conditions contribute to a long harvest period that allows careful cherry selection and supports consistency across production.

Environmental stewardship plays an important role in daily operations. Since 2015, Aquiares has measured greenhouse gas emissions and forest carbon capture through a comprehensive carbon inventory, with verified results showing carbon-neutral and carbon-negative operations. Alongside biodiversity conservation, protected forests, and responsible water management, these efforts help support a production system focused on long-term resilience and the future of coffee farming in Turrialba.
