Entre Ríos Red Honey

Grade SHB EP

Meet Entre Rios Red Honey Green coffee,  from Aquiares Single Estate in Turrialba, Costa Rica. A blend of Marsellesa and Red Obatá varieties, this lot is part of Aquiares’ Entre Ríos project, named after the “land between rivers” where the farm is located. Both varieties share the same Timor Hybrid and Villa Sarchi parentage, creating a coffee designed to deliver balance, versatility, and a distinctive cup profile. Produced within a community that combines long-term agricultural planning, traceability, and quality-focused cultivation.

In the cup, this Red Honey SHB presents notes of berry, dried fruit, cocoa, and brown sugar. The honey process leaves part of the fruit mucilage attached during drying, helping develop additional sweetness, texture, and fruit complexity while preserving clarity in the cup. At Aquiares, the coffee is sun-dried on African raised beds before final mechanical drying, allowing careful control over moisture and consistency throughout the process. The result is a sweet and fruit-forward profile with juicy acidity and a rounded mouthfeel that performs well across modern espresso applications and distinctive single origin programs.

Available in 30 kg bags and protected with GrainPro for freshness, Entre Rios Red Honey SHB is a strong option for roasters looking for a honey processed Costa Rican coffee shaped by careful processing and Aquiares’ long-term focus on consistent coffee production.

Direct trade green coffee imported by JA coffee through long-term relationships at origin, for specialty coffee roasters.

What is so special about this coffee?

Entre Rios Red Honey SHB showcases how the honey process can enhance sweetness and texture while preserving clarity in the cup. The combination of Marsellesa and Red Obatá varieties, both derived from Timor Hybrid and Villa Sarchi parentage, creates a coffee with layered fruit notes, rounded sweetness, and a balanced structure. Developed as part of Aquiares’ Entre Ríos project, the lot was designed to bring together two closely related cultivars into a singular and versatile cup profile.

What makes this coffee even more distinctive is the team behind it. Aquiares, the largest single estate in Costa Rica, has spent years developing micro lots across multiple varieties and processing methods while maintaining detailed traceability for every sublot produced on the farm. Combined with ongoing varietal research, farm renovation programs, and continuous quality evaluation, this approach allows Aquiares to create coffees with distinct identities while maintaining consistency from harvest to export.

Aquiares: Coffee Rooted in Community

Established in 1980, Aquiares has grown into one of Costa Rica’s largest coffee-producing estates, spanning 925 hectares in Turrialba, with more than 200 hectares preserved as protected forest. Its name, meaning “land between rivers,” reflects the close connection between coffee cultivation, the surrounding environment, and the community that has developed around the farm over generations.

Beyond coffee production, Aquiares has invested in initiatives that support long-term community wellbeing. A housing program introduced in the 1990s helped many workers become homeowners within the community, reinforcing the estate’s belief that sustainable coffee production should support both the land and the people who depend on it. Today, the farm continues combining coffee cultivation, community development, and responsible land management as part of its long-term vision for agriculture.

The Land Behind Aquiares Coffees

Aquiares benefits from elevations ranging between 800 and 1,400 meters above sea level, creating multiple microclimates across the farm. Combined with an extended rainy season and staggered flowering cycles, these conditions contribute to a long harvest period that allows careful cherry selection and supports consistency across production.

Environmental stewardship plays an important role in daily operations. Since 2015, Aquiares has measured greenhouse gas emissions and forest carbon capture through a comprehensive carbon inventory, with verified results showing carbon-neutral and carbon-negative operations. Alongside biodiversity conservation, protected forests, and responsible water management, these efforts help support a production system focused on long-term resilience and the future of coffee farming in Turrialba.
