Grade 1
This Grade 1 washed green coffee from Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia, is produced by women farmers from KOKOWAGAYO, a cooperative bringing together 674 members across Bener Meriah and Central Aceh. Grown between 1,350 and 1,600 masl, the lot combines multiple Arabica varieties and undergoes triple picking, adding an additional level of sorting and selection to its preparation.
Citrus stands out first, followed by layers of caramel, chocolate, nuts, and warm spice. Bright, tart acidity keeps the washed profile clean and lively, while a smooth body rounds out the cup with a long, lingering finish.
Available in a 60kg bag with GrainPro protection to help preserve freshness, this Indonesia Grade 1 washed green coffee combines a classic Gayo profile with triple-picked preparation and the traceability of a cooperative made up of women coffee farmers.
One of the key details behind this Gayo lot is its triple-picked preparation. After processing, the coffee goes through additional selection to improve the consistency of the green coffee before export. Combined with its Grade 1 preparation, this adds another level of attention to sorting beyond the washed process itself.
That preparation matters for a coffee bringing together production from multiple members and varieties. KOKOWAGAYO collects coffee across 15 village units before centralized hulling, sorting, packaging, and warehousing in Takengon, giving the cooperative a system for bringing coffee from hundreds of individual farms together for export.
KOKOWAGAYO was established in 2014 as a cooperative specifically for women coffee farmers in Gayo. Its creation came from the experience that women in mixed cooperatives often had limited participation in leadership and decision-making, even though they were actively involved in coffee production. The cooperative was created to give women their own space within the production and business of coffee.
Today, KOKOWAGAYO brings together 674 women farmers across Bener Meriah and Central Aceh. Beyond producing coffee, members participate in programs covering leadership, coffee quality, cupping, pruning, composting, and farm management, giving women more opportunities to build both technical knowledge and a stronger role within their cooperative.
KOKOWAGAYO's members manage approximately 463 hectares of coffee across 708 plots, growing Arabica varieties including Catimor, Bourbon/Gayo 2, Tim-Tim/Gayo 1, and P88/Gayo 3. Production is organized across 15 village collection units, reflecting the many small plots that come together through the cooperative.
The growing area has a wet tropical climate and Andisol soils formed from volcanic ash parent material. Harvest runs from September through April, connecting coffee from individual member farms through the cooperative's collection and processing structure.
