Grade SHB
Entre Rios Natural SHB brings together a blend of Red Obatá, Timor, and Villa Sarchi-derived varieties produced at Aquiares Estate in Turrialba, Costa Rica. Named after the farm itself, "land between rivers", this lot reflects Aquiares’ approach to combining complementary varieties to create a distinctive cup profile while maintaining full traceability from farm to export.
In the cup, this coffee shows notes of berry, dried fruit, cocoa, and roasted nuts, supported by rounded sweetness and a smooth mouthfeel. The natural process adds depth and fruit character while maintaining balance and clarity throughout the profile. Juicy acidity and layered sweetness give the coffee a vibrant but controlled expression that performs well across modern espresso profiles and fruit-forward single origin offerings.
Offered in very small quantities, Entre Rios Natural SHB is a strong option for roasters looking for a naturally processed Costa Rican coffee with structure, sweetness, and a balanced fruit profile. A coffee shaped by careful variety selection, controlled drying, and Aquiares’ long-term focus on consistency and traceability.
This is unroasted coffee ready to be roasted at home or your local roastery.
Entre Rios Natural SHB is built around a blend of closely related varieties developed from Timor Hybrid and Villa Sarchi genetics. At Aquiares Estate, these varieties are combined to create a coffee that balances sweetness, fruit character, and structure, allowing the natural process to add complexity without overshadowing the character of the coffee itself. The result is a profile that feels expressive while remaining well defined in the cup.
What makes this coffee truly unique is the production system behind it. The team at Aquiares maintains detailed lot separation and traceability throughout processing, while ongoing varietal research and farm renovation programs continue to shape the future of coffee production on the estate. This long-term investment in cultivation, quality evaluation, and variety development helps ensure that each harvest builds on decades of accumulated knowledge and experience.
Established in 1980, Aquiares has grown into one of Costa Rica’s largest coffee-producing estates, spanning 925 hectares in Turrialba, with more than 200 hectares preserved as protected forest. Its name, meaning “land between rivers,” reflects the close connection between coffee cultivation, the surrounding environment, and the community that has developed around the farm over generations.
Beyond coffee production, Aquiares has invested in initiatives that support long-term community wellbeing. A housing program introduced in the 1990s helped many workers become homeowners within the community, reinforcing the estate’s belief that sustainable coffee production should support both the land and the people who depend on it. Today, the farm continues combining coffee cultivation, community development, and responsible land management as part of its long-term vision for agriculture.
Aquiares benefits from elevations ranging between 800 and 1,400 meters above sea level, creating multiple microclimates across the farm. Combined with an extended rainy season and staggered flowering cycles, these conditions contribute to a long harvest period that allows careful cherry selection and supports consistency across production.
Environmental stewardship plays an important role in daily operations. Since 2015, Aquiares has measured greenhouse gas emissions and forest carbon capture through a comprehensive carbon inventory, with verified results showing carbon-neutral and carbon-negative operations. Alongside biodiversity conservation, protected forests, and responsible water management, these efforts help support a production system focused on long-term resilience and the future of coffee farming in Turrialba.
