Coope Tarrazu

Costa Rica

Introducing the Costa Rican cooperative that brings consistent high-scoring cups since 1960.

About Coope Tarrazu

Coope Tarrazú, was founded on October 13, 1960, by a determined group of 228 small coffee producers in the highland hills of San Marcos de Tarrazú, Costa Rica. The Cooperative was born out of a desire for fairness and collective strength in the face of an industry that once imposed unequal prices and conditions on independent growers. Tarrazú’s volcanic soils; cool mountain altitudes (between 1,200 – 1,900 meters), and the region’s deep coffee traditions have shaped a community where passion, resilience, and respect for the land are inseparable from daily life.

From the beginning, the cooperative was more than a business: it was a lifeline for families and a catalyst for social and economic progress; empowering farmers to share technical assistance, stabilize incomes, and access global markets together. Over more than six decades, the cooperative has grown to include nearly 5,000 member growers, most tending to small farms under 2 hectares, each contributing their unique touch to the region’s celebrated coffees.

As the legacy of Coope Tarrazú has expanded, so has its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community wellbeing. The cooperative champions environmentally responsible farming practices, invests in programs that support families and children during harvest seasons, and diversifies local opportunities through complementary services that strengthen the rural economy. Today, Coope Tarrazú stands as a symbol of what smallholder cooperation can achieve: resilient communities, exceptional coffee, and a proud regional identity that resonates from the hills of Los Santos to coffee lovers around the world.

What makes this Costa Rican coffee so special?

Rooted in high-altitude terrain ranging from approximately 1,200 to 1,900 meters, the cooperative benefits from Tarrazú’s cool mountain climate, defined wet and dry seasons, and mineral-rich soils that consistently produce coffees of notable body, sweetness, and taste. Each farmer contributes to a shared commitment to quality, preserving regional character while honoring individual care and tradition. The result is coffee that reflects both place and community, working in harmony with the environment.
Its cooperative model; which empowers small producers through shared resources, technical support, and access to global markets, ensures both quality and long-term sustainability. Continued investment in responisble processing, social programs for farming families, and ongoing quality innovation, allowing its members to thrive while maintaining exceptional standards, making Coope Tarrazu a benchmark for Costa Rican coffee worldwide.
