About The Kii Coffee Factory

The Kii Coffee Factory was founded in 1995 in Kirinyaga, at the foot of Mt. Kenya, named after the river that runs beside it. A couple of years later, it became part of the Rungeto Farmers’ Cooperative Society, bringing together hundreds of smallholder farmers, most with just a few hundred trees. From the start, its purpose was clear: to give local growers a place to process their coffee with care and reach better markets.

At Kii, every step of the washed process is done with precision. Hand-picked cherries are sorted, pulped, fermented, washed, soaked, and then dried slowly on raised beds. Over the years, the factory has invested in practical improvements like tiled channels, water recycling, and composting, combining tradition with sustainability to keep quality consistently high.

Thanks to its altitude, rich volcanic soils, and the dedication of its community, Kii has built a reputation for bright, clean coffees that showcase the best of Kenya—notes of citrus, berries, and stone fruit with remarkable clarity. For roasters, it offers both reliability and a taste of the vibrant land and people who stand behind it.

What makes Kenyan coffee so special?

What makes Kii’s coffees so special is the combination of place and process. Grown in Kirinyaga at high altitudes on rich volcanic soils, the cherries mature slowly and develop layered flavors—bright citrus, juicy berries, and a sparkling acidity that has become a hallmark of Kenyan specialty coffee. At the factory, meticulous washed processing ensures consistency: hand-sorted cherries, controlled fermentation, extended soaking, and slow drying on raised beds all bring out the clarity and vibrancy in each lot.

Traceability adds another layer of value. Every delivery to Kii Coffee Factory is recorded and linked back to the smallholder farmers who produced it, giving roasters transparency from cherry to export. This system not only guarantees quality but also connects the cup to the community behind it, making Kii a trusted source for some of the most distinctive and traceable Kenyan coffees available today.
